I maintain just one local version of j. Solved the update-alternatives
issue, manually choosing (cd $BIN && ln -sf ijconsole-9.4 ijconsole)
instead of the update-alternatives command. Leading to the next
problem: addons/dev aren't copied to /usr/share/j/9.04/addons/dev
/usr/share/j/9.4/addons:
total used in directory 12 available 755.1 GiB

drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Mar 3 13:24 ..

$ ijconsole
not found: /usr/share/j/9.4/addons/dev/eformat/eformat.ijs

|[-133] /usr/share/j/9.4/system/util/boot.ijs
Solution: recursive copy from unpacking location to /usr/share/j/9.4/addons
j now seems functional.
