Hi Bill, I can't count on a given device having an sdcard and, as it is removable media, should not be relied upon in any case. I have been browsing system permissions and I am not finding a directory which I think would be permissable to use outside.
There is a brute-force option in 1.0.1 named "make writeable" under menu/help. It sets world read/write permissions on every file under app_jconsole (which I still am compelled to think I am limited too under the Android model).
