Hi Godmar,
That's what I asked myself as well. More so, will there be no new
projects allowed, and all existing extension would have to be moved
from it? Does anybody know about usable alternatives that support some
SVN or CVS managed web presence that would allow stuff like version
history, links to AMO and maybe a blog. I wouldn't be too concerned
about losing the drupal part of it, but having a mozdev.org site that
gives a basic unified hosting platform for a lot of extensions still
feels like something very valuable to both users and developers alike.
It seems like an awful waste seeing that their web site template worked
so well for such a long time. Looks like somebody has to look for
sponsors. Did anybody offer the site to google? If there is not other
sponsor, I bet they'd love to buy it.
If the site itself could be frozen and still be open to new AMO
extension submissions that would be my personal favorite solution. But
of course I am aware there is administrative overhead involved (even
without developing the site further) and I am aware that probably makes
for the major part of the cost, seeing that hosting itself is
relatively cheap these days.
cheers,
Axel
Does 'read-only' mode mean that no more CVS check-ins will be possible?

I'd prefer to put the site into read-only mode instead of shutting it
down so it can serve as an archive. Additionally, if there is a need
for this we would look into providing migration services for any
project owners wanting to take their code and project history somewhere
else.

Thank
you for the effort you put into this site over the years.
One comment: I, like perhaps others, had assumed that mozdev is run by
the Mozilla foundation (up until about 1 year ago when the issue was
clarified to mine and others surprise). Given the amount of funding
Mozilla has, it really seems more appropriate they should be supporting
their add-on developer community with resources and time - it is, after
all, they who benefit the most.
When you shut down the site, will it be possible to obtain a snapshot
of the CVS repository and the mailing list archive? We have a fair
amount of development history in there we would hate to lose.

I wanted to follow up on this to highlight one part of this blog post
most relevant to project owners:
"Going forward, if no individuals or groups step forward it is likely
that the site will wind-down. This would look something like putting
the site into read-only mode for archive purposes, and helping project
owners migrate to other hosting solutions. Only as a last resort would
the site be shut down completely."
I realize we've posted similar calls for involvement in the past, but
this really is the last opportunity to get involved. At this point,
moving to read-only mode is a definite possibility.
Feel free to write back with any questions or comments.
