Poverty forces man to live with dead wife

Poverty forced Daeng Ali, 81, to keep the body of his wife inside a room in his
home in the Pannampu sub-district of the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar for
three days before collecting enough money for her burial.

The body of Daeng Ona, 80, was discovered on Tuesday by a public order officer,
who immediately reported the finding to the police.

Ali, a trash picker, told police during questioning that he had deliberately
locked up his wife's body while he sought money for her funeral.

"I knew she died three days ago, but I did not have money to bury her," Ali
said.

An autopsy performed by the Bhayangkara police hospital concluded that Ona died
of severe malnutrition. The forensic team found no traces of violence.

"The body was very thin and looked like a skeleton. Most likely malnutrition
and degenerative diseases were the cause of death," forensic doctor Mauluddin
said.

Ali has been living in a six by eight square meter makeshift house for years.
His belongings include four plastic plates, two plastic glasses, an old bed and
a small cupboard.
