Ollanta Humala leaves Cuba satisfied with his visit
Aida Calvac Mora
SHORTLY before leaving for Peru, President-elect Ollanta Humala expressed
satisfaction with his visit to the island and with the good progress of
regional integration.
Humala speaking to the national and
international press before leaving the island.
The future Peruvian leader, who is to be inaugurated on July 28, described as
very positive his meetings with Fidel and President Raúl Castro, in which they
discussed subjects like health, education, sports and the current Latin
American juncture.
Humala advocated the strengthening of economic and cultural relations with Cuba
and, in particular, expressed his interest in implementing in Peru the Cuban
literacy program I Can Do It, "which has produced very successful results in
Venezuela, Bolivia and other nations."
He also affirmed that he had spoken by telephone with Venezuelan President Hugo
Chávez, and said that he is very well, very animated and looking forward to
returning to the Caracas government.
Asked about the U.S. blockade of Cuba, Humala affirmed that it is shameful that
a policy such as this, which in no way helps American integration, should exist
in the 21st century.
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla bade farewell to the distinguished
visitor at José Martí International Airport.
