IMHO the best is to have a look to the grub manual at gnu.org

or   #info grub

Did you change the BIOS translated geometry or move the disk to another machine or controller after installation ?
    

yes, that's why it's giving that error now.  At least with linux I could 
use a boot disk to get in and re run lilo, but the grub boot disk still 
gives me that error

perhabs you can hit "c"  on boot
grub>help geometry

or "e" on the highlightet menu-entry

or boot in rescue-mode from the psyche-cd
and #chroot /what/was/mounted/your/partition
and edit your /boot/grub/grub.conf
