While there are others on the list who will probably be able to make better
recommendations in relation to protools specific questions, I will say that
if you intend on continuing to use sonar, and your RME fireface, I would
make sure whatever you do choose opporates on the macky control protocol -
so you should check about the euphonix, 003 command 8 etc.
I use the RME fireface UFX myself, and I'm not sure how or if you use their
total mix software, but in my experience its totally inaccessible with jaws,
however, you can set up monitor mixes and do all kinds of routing with the
total mix if you have a control surface with the macky control protocol. I
myself just bought one of the cheep Behringer control surfaces to tie me
over and to play around with some things, but its fairly cheep feeling and
I'm not sure how well it would play with protools 9 under macky emulation.
I'm also going to get in touch with RME directly and see if they might be
interested in implementing some short cut or midi control so I can control
the phantom power button and other features, as it would be useful, and they
update their software quite regularly, so it could be a possibility. It
might be useful to try and find out how many blind engineers etc there are
out there using RME stuff, because I think they might be willing to play
ball based on their previous interaction with customers.
Especially with PT 9 being open, RME stuff is a great and cheap way to get 0
latency monitoring (well one sample latency) and it will work great with
sonar too for those who want to keep up on both.
So yeah, I'd recommend you get somethingg that will help you take advantage
of the RME total mix features too, because it's a very cool thing to be able
to control and have at your disposal if you are setting up monitor mixes,
using outboard gear or all kinds of things.
Apologies if you already know all this, and or if you have somehow gained
accessability with the RME total mix software with jaws, please do tell!

Subject: Control Surface, What To Buy?
Hi,
I finally decided to buy a mac to learn Protool. After going through list
archive, it seems like control surface makes a lot easier for us to use
Protool.
I'm looking at a few choices, and I'm wondering if someone can help me to
choose a right equipment. Digi 003, M-Audio ProjectMix I/O, Mackie Control
Universal Pro, Euphonix Artist Mix, and Digidesign Command 8
I'm looking for something less than $1500. Also, It's not critical, but
I'd love to be able to use it on Windows as well since I haven't entirely
given up on Sonar yet. Also hopefully on Logic when Logic becomes more
accessible. I have RME fireface 800, so the audio interface combo is not a
huge factor.
Would any of them fit my criteria?
Lastly, can you get Protool 9 with Digi 003? It seems like Digi 003 comes
with Protool 8 LE.
