Hi, Does compacting work on the original file or create a new track with
a new file in it? I am trying to do this and not create and delete lots
of new files in the process the track in question I am talking about is
one large wav file that has the clicks of record and play as well as the
click at the end of the stop button. Nick Gawronski

Ah, if that's what was meant, yes, what's in the timeline is a region that
could be a whole file or not.
just to add to Steve's comments, it's not necessary to bounce, per se. If
you're working on a file whose beginning and end has been trimmed, you can
simply Compact the file to get rid of anything that has been chopped off.
Further, even if you've sliced up a file in many places, you can select the
entire range and Consolidate the regions. This will create a new continuous
file with the edits. Keep in mind that this deletes the regions from the
timeline although they will still reside in the clips list. One thing you can
do to preserve your edits is to duplicate the playlist and then consolidate the
copy. Your edits will still exist on the original playlist and the duplicated
playlist will contain the consolidated file.
Hope that helps,
Slau

Think I get what he means with the second question. Nick, the way it
works is that Pro Tools (and pretty much every DAW I can think of now)
use non-destructive editing unless you tell them not too. In a
nutshell, what that means is that the original audio files will always
remain unchanged, and the timeline within your Pro Tools session file
is kinda like a set of instructions that tells Pro Tools any changes
you've made to it. So it might say, "ok Toolsy, play the man the first
27 seconds of his audio as it comes. Now, skip the next 4 seconds
because he deleted those from the timeline. Btw, it's fine to leave
that 4 second gap there, because he was in Slip Mode when he deleted
that bit, so he obviously wanted to hear the gap. Ok next he wants to
here another 7 seconds of audio, then skip 2 secs, but play
continuously on to the next bit of the audio file, do not leave a 2
second gap there because Nick used Shuffle Mode when he deleted that
last bit, so Nick obviously didn't want that 2 second gap to be
noticeable. Do your damn job Toolsy and nobody will ever know that 2
second bit of audio existed" etc. So with that in mind, if you want an
audio file that you can play outside of Pro Tools which sounds exactly
the same as what you're hearing within Pro Tools, you'll need to
bounce it to disk. That'll tell Pro Tools to build you an audio file
that's based on your original, but with all the changes you've made,
and it'll spit it out wherever you've told it to save it when it's
done. Seems a bit convoluted, but trust me, without non-destructive
editing, every operation you perform would take way more time even on
a powerhouse of a computer, and there'd be many, many fewer
possibilities.
Make sense? Shout if not.

Hi Nick,
I think I mentioned in that recording that I'm using Pro Tools HD which has
an extra numeric keypad mode aside from Classic and Transport. The num pad
can act in Shuttle mode. Host-based systems have Shuttle mode that uses the
Control modifier along with numbers. It's in the shortcuts pdf.
I'm not clear about what you're asking in the second part of your message. I
understand you have clicks from starting and stopping that you'd like to
eliminate. What's the problem? You can't select and delete?

Hi, In the first editing modes example which I still have there was
portions where you were moving backwards in the audio and it was moving
like it sounded on a tape recorder when it was playing back very fast. On
my digi 003 I can get these fast speeds only when using the control that
you have to turn back but am not able to get these speeds when I can hear
audio moving back and forward mainly sounds like it does when you skip on
a CD track. My question is in the normal pro tools 11 how do I get the
fast speed playback when using the number pad or can this only be done on
the interface? Also, in regards to removing things at the beginning of the
audio track I have some sessions where I have the click of the recording
button and want to remove this from the audio track itself as well as the
click of the stop button. Currently if I do this in pro tools then take a
look at the raw audio file the clicks are still in there. How can I
remove them from the files as well as the tracks in pro tools 11? Nick

thanks slau. yes i need to use both of these methods depending on what
i'm doing. but i do often need to cut regions out of a project, so i'll
try this and see how i go. I'll have a look at this file.

Long story short, Shuffle Mode is what you want and that would be f1.
Slip Mode keeps regions where they are after cutting out sections and
that's f2. There's a quirk with the modes in Pro Tools these days that
seems to flip to Shuffle Mode. If you know you're going to want to stay
in a particular mode, there's a mode lock shortcut. Can't remember what
it is but you can find it in the shortcuts pdf.

Steve,
You would deffinitly want to listen to Slau's recent demo regarding
modes. He sent out an email with a link to a demonstration probably 3
weeks ago or so, if you don't have please let me know, and I can get
you a link to it, assuming Slau has deleted it from his Dropbox.
HTH.

this is covered in mat and rob's tutorial, i just haven't found it
