How can I check my main playback engine before starting ProTools? Are you saying to go into system prefs, sounds, then make sure it's correctly set?

Chris.

Nope. This has happened to me. No biggie. This happens whenever you boot pro tools, and it’s main interface is not present. If you know you’re gonna have to do that, just check your Playback engine before starting so you’re all good.
