Steve,

You can select/split notes within the Event Operations window. Remember that 
the dialog box will help you define the range of notes but what you'll need to 
do beside that is define the range within the timeline. First, make sure your 
MIDI track is selected. Select a range in the timeline. Press Option-y to bring 
up the Event Operations dialog. If you choose to select the note range, cut it 
and paste the information into a new track. I haven't tried splitting in years 
so I can't remember what the default behavior is but you might want to 
experiment.
