yes, although, and this is just my opinion, the signal to noise ratio
isn't the best over there. Just yesterday, the list devolved into
politically-motivated posts. I suppose it's still a good place to
check out, if your friend is getting into playing with audio more as a hobby.
Sonar is pretty much dead, especially for people just getting into
this today. For that reason, I recommend the following two solutions
and their related resources.

the Reaper+Osara folks may have TeamTalk channels and/or Roger groups
going as well.
The Samplitude folks have a Roger group now.
Both Reaper with Osara and Samplitude with Samplitude Access are
robust solutions that work with the latest versions of these two
DAW's. We can now do things like object/event-based editing and
manipulation of automation curves after the fact with both of these.
Reaper is virtually-free and so is Osara. Pair that with NVDA and you
can certainly try it all out and see if the workflow in Reaper works for you.
Samplitude can be tried for a full month, and the Samplitude Access
solution is also free.
I'm already invested in Jaws, plus I need Jaws and extensive Hotspot
Clicker support to run things like Superior Drummer, Melodyne Single
Track and the TT Dynamic Range Meter. For that reason, plus just
liking the environment and the sound of the audio, I've gone with Samplitude.
Although Reaper is not for me, but it's perfect for others, and I
would certainly recommend giving it a try. There's no cost involved.
For those who still haven't contributed to funding the finishing of
Osara, especially porting Osara to the Mac, please consider donating
