Figure out what you are willing to spend first,
and then look on Sweetwater or similar retailer's
sites to find mics for various applications in that price range.

For live work the dynamic Shure 58 is the
industry workhorse even some big name artist use. Cost $99
The Shure 58 can also be used in the studio
depending what sound you are going for.
My sense is that if you are asking these
questions that you are new to the home
recording studio scene. If that is the case
your mic locker should only have one mic, the
Sure 58. Over time you can bring in artists
that might have their own mics and you will be
exposed to new sounds and grow your mic needs
organically. To kick things off go with the 58.
If you are micing instruments the Sure 57 also $99 is a good one.
The 57 & 58 do not require phantom power so one
less thing to worry about. And they are rugged and last a long time.
If you branch out into condenser phantom
powered mics look for cardioid mic
patterns. One you have to be right on top of
to make sound. This will help eliminate
unwanted noise that is natural to the room you
are recording in. Large diaphragm for voice
and small diaphragm for instrument
recording. But note condenser mics don’t like to be dropped.
Ribbon mics are through the roof expensive, are
fragile, and should be handled by experienced sound engineers only.
These are just a few thoughts on mics. If you
want to go further into various mics then be a
little more precise in the purpose you are to
use mics for. Broadcast is a little vague.

Depends on purpose. Live performance, strictly
studio, mic for instruments, Drums.
Several types of mic’s I know of.
Ribbon- strictly studio and delicate some what fragile but great sound.
Condenser- This mic is phantom powered and
come in come in small and large diaphragm types.
Dynamic- good all around mic for live
performance and studio work including micing instruments and vocals.
There may be other mic types I am forgetting or
are unfamiliar with. In any event many
manufacturers making lots of mics. So pic your budget $99 to $8 or 9 thousand.
Narrow things down for the list and someone
might have good recommendations for your purpose and budget.
