The reason I suggested the trim plug in is because from what I remember about 
those mixers, they aren’t the cleanest  and most Hi gain preamps. Also that 
mixer has combo jacks so if he is plugging in an XLR cable it should be going 
straight to the mic pre.  Only if he is plugging in a quarter inch cable would 
he have to select between instrument and line level. The question then is what 
mic is he using? Is it going through an external Mic Pre first or direct into 
the mixer? If its a low output dynamic like an SM7 or similar then he may need 
something like a Cloudlifter or similar gain boosting device to get the level
