Not exactly. The google group requires joining as well, and you have to jump through a hoop or two, as with the old list. My guess would be that due to Google's popularity, spammers have learned how to automate the hoops more-so than with mailman. We can and do remove any spamming accounts, but beyond that, we'd have to moderate everyone who joins, which seems to me like it would make the discussion less welcoming.
