Michael,

I have had at least 4~6 of these same messages now over about a week. They
are also making through both my spam filters and I end up manually deleting
them. Not a huge problem but not very professional for our group either.

Not exactly. The google group requires joining as well, and you have
to jump through a hoop or two, as with the old list. My guess would be
that due to Google's popularity, spammers have learned how to automate
the hoops more-so than with mailman.

We can and do remove any spamming accounts, but beyond that, we'd have
to moderate everyone who joins, which seems to me like it would make
the discussion less welcoming.

How much spam are you guys getting? I've only gotten 2 messages
recently (both in the last couple days). Is GMail catching the rest
for me?
