Yes! Have had this loads of times, particularly when adding to recordings -
I can have recorded and edited hours of stuff, and when I come to add some
more, I get the message you have experienced! I think one way so as not to
lose all the recordings, is to choose the *undo* from the *Editing
Information* menu, this has worked for me, but as it suggests, all the
edited parts of the recording get restored, and you're back with the
original recordings.

I think recording on to card is much more stable - as a disk player, I don't
think the PTR1 is very robust!
