An Analysis of The Bundamba/Woodridge By-election - 5 February, 2000

What can be learned from the Bundamba/Woodridge, Queensland by-election?

Labor, under Premier Peter Beattie won handsomely despite the neglect of
long-serving, and self-serving politicians - both of whom were stalwarts of
the Labor Party.
One ex-member having drawn his hefty superannuation package, now occupies a
$250,000 position in Hollywood, USA for the State Labor government.
The other ex-Member who likewise withdrew his hefty superannuation package
the day he left Parliament, will no doubt pay the costs of fifty sex
charges.
Premier Beattie was not exactly dynamic in unloading these - to quote his
words: bludgers'.
Premier Beattie stated in the Labor campaign, "That a vote for Labor would
send a message to the Federal Coalition - the Aussie Battler was against the
GST".
In Woodridge the Independent' candidate, a caring and long-serving
Councillor did nothing for his campaign by saying -if he was elected - he
would vote with the government provided "They looked after Woodridge".
The Liberal candidate suffered from the stigma of the GST and the generally
poor performance of the pro-republican Liberal leader, Dr Watson.
Let us analyse the rest of the Independents.
The abysmal performance of the Democrats candidate indicated the public's
perception that it was the Democrats who aided and abetted Prime Minister
John Howard in passing the GST. (The other who helped in its passing, former
Senator Mal Colson, received his thanks from the Prime Minister by the DPP's
dropping of all charges of fraud and rorting all travel expenses).
If the remaining Independent candidates are examined we see that Colene
Hughes, Independent candidate for Bundamba secured 34% of the primary vote
in the June, 1998 election when standing under the banner of Pauline Hanson
and One Nation. This time around she secured just 4% - where did the other
30% go?
The other Independent' Heather Hill, who is a pathfinder for the newly
named City Country Alliance - and a former One Nation stalwart with a Senate
seat revoked on grounds of dual-citizenship - secured 14%+ in her own right.
The message for would-be Independent Candidates is not to depend on their
own charisma, but on the strength of the proposed Alliance of Independents.
This Alliance of Independents is no contradiction in terms but should be
compared to an analogy of a Regular Army Division with an Independent
Commando Brigade.
The former Division is representative of a political Party. Frequently slow,
cumbersome, unwieldy and hide-bound in strategy and tactics. The members are
subject to a rigid and inflexible hierarchy, many of whom regard their role
as a long-term career.
The Independent Commando Brigade comprises highly motivated volunteers,
well-informed and dedicated, highly-trained and mobile. Their fire-power and
tactical opportunities frequently win the day.
If Independent candidates possess the moral courage and conviction of
beliefs, from informed study into the demise of Australia's Sovereignty and
Economic Independence, they would go to an election with well-promulgated
policies on behalf of all other Independents in the Alliance.
This Alliance would unashamedly and unambiguously state heir main aims as
the Regaining of Australia's Sovereignty and Economic Independence leading
to national self-sufficiency.
In addition, this Alliance of Independent candidates will Pledge to obstruct
and withhold any legislation not beneficial to Australia's employment and
financial betterment.
Now is the time to recruit fledgling candidates of right motivation and
dedication and commence a basic information package - in layman's terms -
which provides facts and figures of those responsible for our present
unenviable position.
