I don't have anything concrete at the moment, past a link to http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/8b47f3cabf9f/netwerk/base/public/nsIStandardURL.idl#l53 for some of the differences in the way Gecko parses various hierarchical URIs based on its built-in knowledge of the scheme....
