I made the suggested changes to the internal mic and internal speakers to
attempt to effect an interim workaround by running hdajackretask and set the
override for the internal mic and internal speakers to "not connected", applied
the change as well as setting the boot override. After rebooting and checking
those settings remained, I then let the screen timeout to powersave - and then
brought the screen lighting back and tested the sound - despite having made
those changes the HDMI sound had been reset back to analog stereo.  So unless
there are other changes required this is not a workaround that helps.
