I originally suggested defining the stages in a config file, eg: [stages] default=main 1=pre 2=main 3=post This defines 3 stages, ordered 1, 2, 3, with names "pre", "main", "post". If no stage is specified then the default stage is used, ie. all types/classes will be created/instantiated/whatever in the main stage unless specified otherwise. Regarding the sub-graph issue, surely you just add milestones into the main graph which represent the stage boundaries. Anything in the "pre" stage has "before => Boundary[1]", anything in "post" has "requires => Boundary[2]", and everything in main has "requires => Boundary[1], before => Boundary[2]".
