This is a really good point.  I am actually a bit suprised as I thought git 
discouraged that kind of access as they didn't have a clean separated API.  
In any case I'm pretty confident this would be easy to do with bzrlib API as 
well.

Really all I'm saying here is that when implementing this feature, if you 
treat git as implementation detail and wrap it's behaviour in something like 
a provider (which will need to be done to some degree anyways unless git 
provides ruby bindings, no?), then at some point some interested folk may 
look into implementing such provider based on another VCS ;)  Obviously 
there's no point trying to capture differences between different systems from 
the start, that would be hard enough job to do in one go anyways.
