The match with symlinks qua symlinks is pretty hideous as well.  It just
looks a little less lumpy because it's been hammered on so much, but it
exhibits the stress fracture "if things are going to break anywhere, they'll
break here" pattern.  I'm with Nigel; let's do them both.
