I'm guessing the black screen is something like macrovision, when the signal either gets strong enough or the macrovision is just on selected scrambled channels. >From here, somebody could script together a channel scanner quite easily for scanning channels, wait for 3-5 seconds, and while waiting/holding on a frequency/channel - checking for a signal. ivtv-tune is probably a much better option then xawtv's scantv. And for a viewer just use mplayer. Cheers for getting me going into the correct direction!
