I agree, avatars takes much system resources. As i discover avatarcache code is buggy and takes very much memory. I'm planing to rewrite the avatars code but has no time now.
All last year my jabber server was running on a server with 128Mb ram and it was very hard to get icqt and msnt working on this server. When i made some patches which fully disable avatar support it stoped to take such big amount of memory. My idea is to rip off avatarcache at all and just get avatars from icq/msn on vcard request. It will provide an abbility to get avatars for contact, reduce incomming traffic for a client because of clean presence iq packets.
