I don't know what apache-mpm is but libgcj's gc will normally crash your process if any of its memory allocation routines are invoked from a thread it didn't initialize. This includes the creation of a java.lang.Thread instance meaning that a new thread for PyLucene can only be created from the main thread or from another PyLucene.PythonThread instance.
I can't be more specific about how to make this work as I don't use PyLucene inside a web environment myself. This question has been asked many times on this list before, however, and a search through the archives [1] or Google should tell you more...
