I sometimes tag the Changelog or SVN if I remember.  I usually push
the changes to SVN and let this list know what revision it was.

If you're a student or postdoc you can access a no-cost pre-built
version of PyMOL (http://pymol.org/educational).  Also, some academic
institutions, like UT Southwestern, realize PyMOL's importance to
their students, faculty, and staff and financially support further
development by paying for access to the Incentive version of PyMOL.
If you were on such a campus, you could easily download the pre-built
version of Incentive PyMOL visiting http://pymol.org/dsc.
