Just to follow this up, if I use exclusively the nvidia drivers (so both
opencl and rendering on nvidia - I'm running an optimus system, and
finally managed to get it sort of working) it doesn't complain and
renders fine.

The other option that works just fine is to process on intel and render
on nvidia (and display on intel!).

For the time being I'm going to ignore the problem and put it down to
flaky drivers. If I find a memory leak I'll report back.
