But the examples are based on PySide which is under LGPL, yet
that does not restrict the authors of the examples as far as
licensing is concerned. Where is the real difference?
Hi,
the difference here is in HOW you use it: according to LGPL (and here
I'm paraphrasing, and this is not an implied license or legal advice,
etc etc), you can use PySide as a separate library in your programs but
if you distribute modified versions of PySide, you must also provide the
source code. However, in the case of the examples, you're most likely
interested in copying blocks of code from them, and that triggers the
viral effect in LGPL. So, the cases indeed are quite different.
My problem with BSD is that I can not find "the BSD" - only a
series of "BSD like" licences.
This is very true, and I don't like BSD too much because of that either.
My personal preference would be the MIT license, but then again, it
probably pays off to align PySide licensing to Qt wherever possible.
This is the boilerplate used in native Qt examples, and the one I'd
recommend to be used in any new PySide examples as well (sans the Nokia
copyright assignment if the code is not written by the core dev team
members, of course):
