Oh, nice - either it didn't do that yet when I last looked at it (which was literally years ago), or else I simply missed that it tried to read the PEP 376 metadata before falling back to dpkg. In that case, the most promising direction for future consolidation is likely to be figuring out a way to reimplement rewheel as an interface shim on top of dirtbike.
