Email Can be fast, as long as it is structured. The list only impose the structure of "Thread" ie. Two mails are in the same thread if they have the same subject.
Each thread can have it's own format. Email use the quoting mechanism using leading ">" ane generally people do not like html (switch to TextOnly in your mail client if it helps you). Therefore inline images are not used often (one prefer).
