The beauty of email is that it sits in your inbox until you get a chance to respond, even if that is a few days later. In IRC, you might have a window of opportunity of a few hours. In a busy chat room, it might be a few seconds before the comment you are replying to disappears off screen into irrelevance. IRC encourages one sentence replies. There really isn't room for complex reasoning or long debates.
