Use the operator named in:

>>> bigstring="python anaconda boa cobra"
>>> smallone="boa"
>>> smallone in bigstring
True

Often used in if statements like this:

>>> if smallone in bigstring:
...   print 'contained'
... else:
...   print 'not'
...
contained
