I believe that Windows (at least up to Windows XP) still supports using ctrl-Z as EOF when reading text files.

It does, at least when the Ctrl Z is the sole contents of a "line".

And it's a pain. :-(

As a practical matter, when entering text in a console window the F6 key generates Ctrl Z.
