This net share Z: drive: what's the technology / software that's behind it? Is it a standard Windows share, or a third-party driver? (If it's a standard Windows share, is it a Microsoft server doing the sharing?)

Yes, this is the right direction to go.  Some NFS implementations, for example, are far less robust than one would really like for the corporate environment.  You might also try temporarily disabling your virus scanner and see if that alters things.
