Hi,

I am looking at developing a game at the moment. The target audience is students in schools. I believe that the game class is a "Serious Game" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serious_games).

The game should complement the curriculum rather than deliver it.

The learning experience should be stored server side and customisable without having to understand the game design. (This I expect is my development work.)

I am avoiding making further design decisions because I don't know the field and in particular, I don't know what is effective.

I have looked at one virtual world style authoring tool, thinking worlds (www.thinkingworlds.com). It is an easy tool. For web deployment it produces ShockWave, which seems unstable and difficult to support. A windows based exe deployment is also available.

Has anyone got any recommendations for reading. I am initially interested in high-level design references for 'Serious Games'. Something that explains how games deliver/complement learning, what is effective and what is not, how to keep a group together etc.

I am also interested in platforms/engines/development tools. In particular if there are easy to use games authoring tools which deliver flash for web consumption.

Thanks,

Kevin
