Absolutely agree, this is a solved problem already. It's not my most favourite logo design ever either (though still better than any others I've seen), but that's irrelevant. Building a strong, consistent brand identity matters FAR more than one's personal preferences. The Mac Python community will improve its own recognition by self-identifying more closely with the larger Python community.
