I haven't been following what changes have been going in lately but if
there are new features to be released then the version number should
be 1.9, not 1.8.1.

Committing new features to a separate branch during stablilisation is
wise. Subversion does not make this easy though. We should migrate to
Git or Mercurial to make this easier.
