Welcome, Steve! Actually I can't reproduce this bug with version 3.4.1.
1) New Writer document, language set to English
2) I type "This text contains a wrong worrd. Testing."
3) I run the spellchecker (F7), it suggests to replace "worrd" with
"word", I click "Change" and the period is preserved.
