Hi Daisy -- Welcome to the project!
That is pretty much what we do on the QA team: confirm bugs and test
new code. And some also write test cases and even code test
automation. So a natural progression for a new volunteer is to start
learning the ropes by working on manual test execution, defect
confirmation and fix verification.
- With new code ("developer snapshot builds") we run manual tests and
enter defect reports where we find something wrong.
- Defect reports are also entered by end users. We review these
unconfirmed reports and try to reproduce them, passing the
reproducible ones on to the development team. We call that
"confirming" a defect report.
- When a developer has marked a bug as fix, we retest the steps in the
original defect report to verify that the bug is actually gone.
Right now, as we wait for the a stable build with new OpenOffice 4.0
features in it, I'm encouraging new volunteers to help confirm user
bug reports, to help us reduce our massive backlog of unconfirmed
reports.
But I'd recommend first reviewing our New Volunteer Orientation
modules here: http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/
Some light reading to help you understand how the project works, how
decisions are made, etc. Pay special attention to the Intro to QA
modules. (You can ignore Intro to Marketing and Intro to
Development). As you work through the QA modules you will create an
account on our Bugzilla defect tracking system. When you do that,
send me your userid and I'll add you to the qa-team so you can edit
defect reports.
Welcome aboard!
