Marco, Thanks for your test results. gdalbuildvrt --version shows that I am using GDAL 1.6.3, released 2009/11/19, which is the most recent version for Mac OS X available from http://www.kyngchaos.com/ . GDAL 1.7.0 Release Candidate 1 was issued yesterday. A quick observation with Activity Monitor shows that at start up Qgis 1.4.0 uses 99% of the CPU, and is doing very little disk reading/writing. What version of GDAL is reported by gdalbuildvrt --version? Greg
