stock GDAL v1.5.4 on Ubuntu 9.10 segfaults on every image in the 18sth directory. As Marco mentioned it will be good to hear from William or Tom regarding which version of GDAL is being used if their load times are slow. I will have to try with a different version of GDAL.

It would also be good to hear if removing the 18sth vrt from the project make any difference.

Hm, on my laptop with ubuntu 9.10 and current QGIS svn version,
dcua_qgis140_relative_reduce6_1440x900_17.qgs opens in 3 seconds and
dcua_qgis140_relative_reduce6_1440x900_19.qgs in 4 seconds.

Maybe William or Tom could test it on Mac and check with a debugger where it
spends the time (if it does)?

Probably also important is what GDAL version you are using (in my case it's
the current svn version of GDAL).

Using Qgis 1.4.0, for Mac OS X 10.6, downloaded from
http://www.kyngchaos.com/software/qgis I find that, at start up, the .qgs
project file for my 70 MB GIS project keeps the CPU 99% busy for 4
minutes, the .qgs project file for my 700 MB GIS project keeps the CPU 99%
busy for 8 minutes, and the .qgs project file for my 4000 MB GIS project
keeps the CPU 99% busy for 25 minutes. William Kyngesburye reports similar
results starting up my small Qgis project with Qgis 1.4.0, under Mac OS X
10.6. Craig Leat reports that his .qgs project files regularly take 25
minutes to start up, under Ubuntu. In a particularly good piece of news,
Giovanni Manghi reports starting up my small GIS project with Qgis 1.4.0
takes only 4 seconds, under Linux, which is more than 60 times faster than
  I am experiencing.

For all of my QGIS projects, I observe that AFTER start up, Qgis QUICKLY
pans, and zooms in and out. ESRI ArcGIS starts up all of my GIS projects
  in less than 10 seconds.

This slow start up by Qgis 1.4.0 is the last remaining obstacle preventing
me, and others, from adopting, and promoting Qgis. My small Qgis project
  can be downloaded from
  http://homepage.mac.com/gregcoats/jp2/images/dcua_reduce6_01.zip I will
provide $1,000.00 for a verifiably solution that yields start up times
from .qgs project files of no more than 30 seconds, delivered this month,
and $500.00 for a solution delivered next month. Greg Coats
