I've had a similar problem on ubuntu, which I managed to resolve by removing package qt-at-spi (a screen reading app for accessibility). It also affected Scribus. The solution was provided in the following bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qt-at-spi/+bug/973332
