Here is a command that may help you: gdal_translate -of GTiff -co tiled=yes -co compress=deflate -projwin 24 68 25 67 hwsd.bil clipped.tif It clips one degree wide and high part of the hwsd.bil file and saves it into a small GeoTIFF.
