I'm afraid I don't have any other useful suggestions. Are you using the version of Qgis from William Kyngsburye or the larger binary with libraries compiled into the application? I use William's frameworks and build my own binary, so I cannot attest to possible problems with the non-William approach or even William's binary, although I never had problems with postgis in the past using his binary. Maybe we can narrow it down a bit and see if yours is an isolated issue or a larger problem with the binary you are using.
