Problem solved. I thought that I was using the latest binaries from William Kyngesburye, but I hadn't realized that he had recently upgraded the Postgres/PostGIS packages due to some bugs in previous versions.
With the new binaries, my PostGIS layers in QGIS work very well. A very cool feature for a desktop GIS. Thanks for the product, and thanks to John for trying to help me figure this issue out. David.
