  If by access rights you mean at the file-system level, they are
correct (the owner is the Tomcat user and everyone has can read
it).  Anyway both JARs have the same permissions.  Furthermore, in
the meantime I installed manually Tomcat (so not using the APT
package from Ubuntu) and it worked like a charm.

  So I am pretty confident this is a class loading issue because
of the default Tomcat security policies *in the Ubuntu package*.

  No thanks, I can live with a manually installed Tomcat.  But it
is probably worth ensuring Qizx Server is deployable on Ubuntu
Server, in the Tomcat shipped with the system.  And by extension
on all Debian-packages-based systems, they are kind of usual ;-)
