This is not in the constitution and I have no idea when and why it was
approved.

As a matter of principle I have made a donation to Quanta equivalent to the
subscription. I wonder what other committee members have done,

Well, since you ask the question, I can confirm that I have paid my membership
for this year.

When I raised this question, I was not intending to imply any financial impropriety on the part of any member of the committee. It is a practice that was inherited by the present committee and in my opinion, given the present smaller size of Quanta, should be stopped.

On the whole committee members try hard to keep expenses down. Last year committee meetings cost Quanta £511. When you consider there were three committee meetings and members have to come to a central location from Manchester, Derbyshire, Hertford, Dorset and Somerset, these expenses are not excessive.

The constitution clearly states that committee members can award this free
membership.

This has been used when life membership has been awarded - for example to John Taylor and Bill Newell for their lengthy service to Quanta. (Surely for consistency this should also now apply to Roy Brereton). It should not apply to current committee members.

Best Wishes,
Geoff

PS On the point of the constitution. Could we have this in electronic form for attachment to an email for any member requesting it?
