What is the wiring of your cable? If both are 9 pin this should work: 2 RX <-> 3 TX 3 TX <-> 2 RX 4 DTR <-> 6 DSR 5 GND <-> 5 GND 6 DSR <-> 4 DTR 7 RTS <-> 8 CTS 8 CTS <-> 7 RTS 9 CD NC Most null modem cables will be like this. Try testing the connection first direct using a terminal program each end. Then type characters each side. If you see them uncorrupted, then you have a handshaking problem at speed. If you see nothing at all either end then you have problems. It could be one or other serial card is not working or not set up properly. The Q40 end is the most likely problem, as PC bios will default to an OK state. You will then need a known working PC serial port to test against. One that works with a serial mouse is a good starter, but serial mice work at 1200 bps and do not use handshaking! A port that works at speed with a modem will probably be working, but CTS is often not used at all, and sometimes not even wired on the modem cable. For sernet it is vital that both RTS and CTS are used and working. A 'real' QL is a good testing machine - although only with Hermes/superHermes and working motherboard buffers. -- QBBS (QL fido BBS 2:252/67) +44(0)1442-828255 tony@<surname>.co.uk http://www.firshman.co.uk Voice: +44(0)1442-828254 Fax: +44(0)1442-828255 TF Services, 29 Longfield Road, TRING, Herts, HP23 4DG
