hi all,

i'm new to qlandkartegt and just started using gps for navigation
(bicycle).
until now, i was around with my holux m241 logging and contributing to OSM.
Having now a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx (i had birthday in april *smile*), i
want to make routes and work with them.
As you may know, garmin handheld devices have a limitation of 250 points
per route for navigation "off road" and a total of 500 points for all
routes on the device.

if i use yournavigation.org to make a route (create a gpx file) and then
open it in qlandkarte, what is the workflow to make a route out of it in
qlandkarteqt for upload to garmin 60csx? i tried making an overlay of
the track, then make a route which gives me all
trackpoints->routepoints. i have seen you can reduce the points by
distance or truncate by timestamp.

1) what is the workflow to make out of a complex track a route?

2) is there a possibility to reduce the number of points based on
complexity or information a point gives to the route?

my suggestion to 2:
if you have points p1,p2,p3 and the angle formed by these 3 points is
between intervall [175°;185°] (or customisable +/- 5°, 10°, 20°, 60°,
...°), then p2 can be removed from the route point array. in a way this
is a smoothing of the route without losing short lines. the rationale
for doing such a filtering and not a distance-based filtering is: if you
have (bike or footway routes!) short distances you have to navigate
through woods or residential area, then if you filter by 50 m distance
between route points, if crossings are <50 m apart, the route will loose
shape and at the same time long track parts will still have every 50 m a
route point. if you filter by angle information contributed to the
route, long straight or almost straight distances will have a minimum of
route points spent and routing through complex parts will still keep detail.

btw: i'm using qlandkarteqt 1.1.2 on archlinux

greetings and thank you for all the input!

Damir
