These programs implement the Garmin data protocol, and (as far as I know), you can either access the GPS via the USB storage protocol or via the Garmin data protocol, but not both at the same time.
The first thing I'd try would be unmounting both "disks" and setting the GPS to "normal" mode, that is, don't tell it to go into "USB storage" mode (at least, things work that way in your older Garmin HCx). As long as the GPS is powered and connected to the PC it should show on the "lsusb" output, but this tells nothing about the protocol the GPS is speaking with the computer.
